Santaquin Little Scholars Curriculum- Ms. Kristin has come up with a curriculum that compiles a variety of methods and resources to provide a well rounded educational experience. This curriculum is designed to teach each student the skills they will need to know not only for kindergarten, but hopefully in the future. The program used is called “Phonics By Spelling” which is phonics taught through music, pictures and spellings for reading success. Ms Kristin has used this program the last 8 years and has seen the excitement and success in the children she has taught. SLS Preschool will provide a detailed monthly calendar so you will know exactly what your child is being taught each day of the school year. Mentioned below are a few things which will be included in our units:
Values- Hygiene, sharing, friendship, manners, respect, gratitude, teamwork and responsibility.
Phonics – Alphabet sounds and recognition, rhyming, syllables, sequencing, vowels, consonants, sight words, reading, etc.
Reading- SLS preschool believes that books play such a vital role in learning. We will read at least one book as a class that will go along with the lesson that day. We also have a reading corner full of books the students can read and look at.
Math – Simple math using patterns in preparation for addition and subtraction.
History – Basic Utah History and celebration of holidays. We will celebrate the following holidays and special occasions; Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines, Dr. Suess Day, St Patricks Day, Easter, and Mothers/Fathers Day.
Science – Experiments, measuring and theory testing.
Art – Structured and Non- Structured, painting, coloring, drawing, collages, glueing, and cutting cutting with scissors
Music and Dance – Students will learn how to use basic instruments, music and dance are tied to lesson plans, as well as free play.
Community- Safety week with Police and Fire. Community helpers- Doctor, Dentist, etc.
Fine/gross motor skills – Picking up small items, sorting, writing, jumping, skipping, and throwing.
Playtime – We believe that play is big part in each child’s learning, both structured and unstructured. We provide many learning toys, building blocks, dolls, dress-ups, kitchen, puzzles, and manipulative toys.
Circle time – Activities include learning months, seasons, weather, and the days of the week. All activities that day will reflect what we are learning about such as the centers, sensory bin, books, art, snack, and music.
Homework- Homework is completely optional but open to any students who would like to participate. Homework can be started in October or January. Homework is recommended for those students who will be entering kindergarten the following school year. Homework will be personalized to each child containing: letter sounds, blending words, rhyming words, reading (bob books), scissor practice, name practice, number practice, counting, and much more. The homework will be something short and fun that they will enjoy with you as a parent. This is a great opportunity for students to get ready for Kindergarten and for some children starting to read.
We love teaching with the class range age be from 3-5 years. We feel that it is great for all students involved. They get to make friends, learn and grow together. For those 3-4 years old/ first year of preschool we will be focusing on building their social skills- making friends, understanding emotions, sharing, introduction to basic preschool skills. For those 4-5 years old/ second year of preschool going into kindergarten the following year will be pulling them aside throughout the year to assist them in skills they need extra help in to prepare them for kindergarten.
Unexpected closure- Due to government mandates or infectious deceases. Classes may also be subject to change to an at-home learning environment in order to maintain the health of each member of our class, we will do the best we can to follow CDC and WHO guidelines to be suite each child’s needs. If classes are online tuition will remain the same. Withdrawal procedures will remain in place if you wish to un enroll your child from SLS during such closures. Any changes implemented at SLS will be communicated to you. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
